The majority of ankle and foot pain we see at MPT&Rehab is caused by poor foot stability patterns and/or trauma. The lack of proper function and poor stability will at many times cause injury to the muscles and ligaments of the ankle then affecting the foot. At MPT&Rehab we offer non-surgical options for effectively and safely managing your ankle and foot pain. You will be given a customized treatment plan which will aim to get you back to the level of activity and the lifestyle that you are accustomed to without having to deal with your pain. We will show you how to become pain free, fix the cause, and eliminate your symptoms.

Maywood PT together provide a very specific, individualized and comprehensive approach which will determine the exact cause of the pain and treat it as such.

SYMPTOMS

The majority of foot and ankle pain will be dependent on the area and structures that have been irritated and influenced causing the brain to fire nociception to specific region. At MPT&Rehab we believe the ankle and foot pain is caused and originated due to a lack of function. Most conditions of the foot involve the joints and the corresponding soft tissue.

CAUSES

There are many different causes of ankle and foot pain. One of the main factors could be structural predisposition and poor stability leading to faulty biomechanics. All three factors help determine motor control in the foot and ankle. There are many scenarios where the foot and ankle pain is connected to the knee and hip through the function of the lower kinetic chain. Other causes include but are not limited to:

  • Developmental dysfunctions
  • Developmental imbalance with muscles
  • Muscular strains
  • Ligamentous sprains
  • Poor motor engram functionality
  • Trauma
  • Poor posture

DIAGNOSIS

At MPT&Rehab the doctor will begin with a comprehensive functional examination- which will address the onset, cause, duration, severity, vectors, establish the meaningful task and functional tasks that cause the pain. At this point the cause of the foot and ankle pain will be determined; however x-ray or diagnostic MRI is required in severe cases.

DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS:

  • Heel Pain
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Runners Heel
  • Ankle Sprain
  • Ankle Instability
  • Achilles Tendonitis
  • Shin Splints
  • Middle and inner arch pain
  • Flat Feet disorders
  • Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

TREATMENT

At MPT&Rehab we have extensive experience treating foot and ankle disorders. Based on our functional evaluation we create an individual treatment plan. Treatment options may vary depending on type and stage of the foot and ankle pain and the structures and muscles and joints involved.

Treatment will be a combination of foot specific manual therapy, and physical therapy exercises addressing lower foot stability and lower kinetic chain engaging exercises. We use our expertise in manual medicine and rehabilitation to retrain foot and ankle stability and proprioception. This approach is much more effective over orthotic corrections and steroid injections which merely only mask but not resolve the cause of the pain. The foot and ankle pain will be combated by changing your gait, foot stability and weight bearing with ground forces when walking and running. The rehabilitation program will be aimed at eliminating pain, increasing range of motion, increasing stability and strengthening intrinsic muscles to eliminate the cause of the foot and ankle pain
