KNEE PAIN

INTRODUCTION

The knee joint is a very fundamental anatomical structure part of our gait cycle. The knee is very much dependent on foot stability along with the hip and pelvis biomechanical function. Many times patients come into clinic asking:

- Do I need orthotics to fix my knee pain?
- Am I not running correctly?
- Should I lift my knee or am I using my hamstrings in the right manner?
- What kind of shoes should I be wearing?

Maywood PT together provide a very specific, individualized and comprehensive approach which will determine the exact cause of the pain and treat it as such.

All these questions to one degree or another will impact and influence the knee joint. It is very important to have Dr. Patel or Dr. Hanna look at the function, stability along with the knee joints’ mobility. The majority of knee pain we see at MPT&Rehab is caused by trauma and or poor walking and running posture. Both scenarios will lead to the lack of proper function and poor stability patterns. Thus, due to this lack of function the corresponding and surrounding muscles and ligaments and meniscus are affected due to compensation mechanisms or overuse injuries. At MPT&Rehab we offer non-surgical options for effectively and safely managing your knee pain. You will be given a customized treatment plan which will aim to get you back to the level of activity and the lifestyle that you are accustomed to without having to deal with your knee. We will show you how to become pain free, fix the cause, and eliminate your symptoms.

SYMPTOMS

Knee pain will be dependent on the area and structures that have been damaged due to trauma and/or improper function. Knee pain that is usually non-arthritic is usually located on the upper, lower or inside the knee cap. Other situations will lead to pain in the inner knee or joint line. This is where the sharp, dull and achy, arthritic, meniscal and ligamentous pain originates.

CAUSES

There are many different reasons why one suffers from knee pain. If the injury is not due to trauma, it is very important to look at the stability and the functionality of the knee joint as whole. Dr. Hanna and Dr. Patel will evaluate the knee in all stages of gait and determine whether or not the weight shift and weight bearing of the knee is the reason for the pain. Other causes include but are not limited to:

  • Developmental dysfunctions
  • Developmental imbalance with muscles
  • Muscular strains
  • Ligamentous sprains
  • Poor motor control
  • Trauma
  • Improper gym workout routine
  • Poor motor engram functionality
  • Poor posture
  • Poor gait cycle
  • Foot instability

DIAGNOSIS

At MPT&Rehab the doctor will begin with a comprehensive functional examination- which will address the onset, cause, duration, severity, vectors, establish the meaningful task and functional tasks that cause the knee pain. At this point the cause of the knee pain will be determined; however diagnostic MRI is required in severe cases.

DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS:

  • Meniscus Tears
  • ACL/PCL Tear
  • MCL/LCL Sprain/Tear
  • Runners Knee- Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome
  • PFPS (Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome in non-runners)
  • Patellar Tendonitis- Jumpers Knee
  • Pes Anserine Bursitis/Tendinopathy
  • Plica
  • Inner knee pain
  • Knee Bursitis
  • Iliotibial Band Syndrome
  • Chondromalacia Patella
  • Arthritis
  • Post-Surgical RehabilitationF

TREATMENT

At MPT&Rehab we have extensive experience treating knee pain. Based on a functional evaluation we create an individual treatment plan. Treatment options may vary depending on type and stage of the knee pain and the structures and muscles and joints involved. Treatment will be a combination of manual therapy, and physical therapy exercises. We use our expertise in manual medicine and rehabilitation to retrain the knee to correct the weight shift, foot support that affecting the knee, and knee stabilizing muscles to help insure pain free movement. Also, we use kinesio tape to help stabilize and train muscles to fire and act according to the treatment plan. The rehabilitation program will be aimed at eliminating pain, increasing range of motion, increasing stability and strengthening intrinsic muscles to eliminate the cause of the knee pain.
