SHOULDER PAIN

INTRODUCTION

The majority of shoulder pain we see at MPT&Rehab is caused by poor posture, lack of proper function and poor stability of the shoulder girdle and the surrounding muscles and ligaments around it. The shoulder joint is the most complex joint in the body. The range of motion in the shoulder make it prone to many unwanted injuries- and thus due to this lack of shoulder stability we see many patients with these issues. The shoulder is prone to so many injuries due to the lack of stability which is directly correlated to the fact that the shoulder is never engaged in closed kinetic chain movements and/ or activities. Most common source of shoulder pain; is from shoulder sprain/strains. At MPT&Rehab we offer non-surgical options for effectively and safely managing your shoulder pain. You will be given a customized treatment plan which will aim to get you back to the level of activity and the lifestyle that you are accustomed to without having to deal with your shoulder. We will show you how to become pain free, fix the cause, and eliminate your symptoms.

Maywood PT together provide a very specific, individualized and comprehensive approach which will determine the exact cause of the pain and treat it as such.

SYMPTONS/CAUSES

Shoulder pain is dependent on the area and structures that have been irritated and influenced causing the brain to fire nociception to specific areas of your shoulder. Shoulder pain can be broken down into 5 simple reasons:

  • 1. Trauma
  • 2. Arthritis
  • 3. Instability usually from poor posture development
  • 4. Developmental dysfunctions leading to poor motor control
  • 5. Soft tissue (bursitis, tendinitis)

Pain that disables movement is a warning sign requiring immediate medical attention.

DIAGNOSIS

At MPT&Rehab the doctor will begin with a comprehensive examination- which will address the onset, cause, duration, severity, vectors, establish the meaningful task and functional tasks that cause the shoulder pain. At this point the cause of the shoulder pain will be determined; however diagnostic MRI is required in severe cases.

DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS:

  • Shoulder Arthritis
  • Bicep Tendonitis
  • Frozen Shoulder (Adhesive Capsulitis)
  • Rotator Cuff Tendinitis/Tendinosis
  • Rotator Cuff Tears surgical and non-surgical approaches
  • Labrum Tears
  • Shoulder Instability
  • Shoulder Sprain/Strain
  • Shoulder Tendonitis
  • Shoulder Impingement
  • Shoulder Bursitis
  • Acromioclavicular Joint/Shoulder Separation/Dislocation
  • Clavicle Fractures
  • Scapular Dysfunctions
  • Post-Surgical Rehabilitation

TREATMENT

At MPT&Rehab we have extensive experience treating shoulder pain. Based on a functional evaluation we create an individual treatment plan. Treatment options may vary depending on type and stage of the shoulder pain and the structures and muscles and joints involved. Treatment will be a combination of manual therapy, and physical therapy exercises. We use our expertise in manual medicine and rehabilitation to retrain the shoulder- to help re-establish cortical understanding of the functional correct movement pattern. The rehabilitation program will be aimed at eliminating pain, increasing range of motion, increasing stability and strengthening intrinsic muscles to eliminate the cause of the shoulder pain.
