Back pain is a symptom and complaint of pain sensation in the upper, middle, and lower sections of the spine- either around the musculature and/or the ligamentous attachments sites. Back pain can start as high as the lower part of your neck and go as far down as near your pelvis and sacrum.
Back pain will be dependent on the area and structures that have been irritated and influenced causing the brain to fire nociception to specific areas of your back. At MPT&Rehab we believe that back pain is due to a lack of function. Back pain can be achy, dull, and even at times cause radiation and referred pain. Sometimes back pain can cause numbness and tingling into the leg- in this case, medical attention is required.
There are many different causes of back pain. It can be due to a functional or structural disorder; for example muscle spasms, vertebral misalignment, muscle weakness, core instability, arthritis, disk protrusion, disk herniation and many other issues that the doctors at MPT&Rehab will prove to you during the initial examination. Other causes include but are not limited to:
At MPT&Rehab the doctor will begin with a comprehensive examination- which will address the onset, cause, duration, severity, vectors, establish the meaningful task and functional tasks that cause the back pain. At this point the cause of the back pain will be determined; however diagnostic ultrasonography or an MRI are also very accurate and preferred in determining the stage and extent of the back pain- if needed will be carried out.
At MPT&Rehab we have extensive experience treating back pain. Based on a functional evaluation we create an individual treatment plan. Treatment options may vary depending on the type and stage of the pain. Treatment will be a combination of manual therapy, and physical therapy exercises. We use our expertise in manual medicine and rehabilitation to retrain symmetrical weight bearing and equalize weight shifting to help reduce pressure and decrease hypertonicity in back muscles.
